Malik Olajuwon, A 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, announced he has committed to Southern Methodist University on Thursday. He is the son of 18-year National Basketball Association (NBA) veteran Hakeem Olajuwon, who spent most of his career with the Houston Rockets (1984-2001) before finishing with the Toronto Raptors (2001-2002).
Olajuwon chose the Mustangs over Auburn, Kansas State, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, TCU, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia, UNLV, and several others. He had future visits scheduled with Kansas State (October 16) and Virginia Tech (October 23), but has cancelled those visits now that he has committed to Andy Enfield and the Mustangs.
Malik is currently rated as the No. 66 overall player in the nation, the No. 4-ranked shooting guard, and the No. 15-ranked player in the state of Florida in the class of 2027, according to 247Sports.
Olajuwon spent the Grassroots season playing for JL3 Elite on the Nike EYBL Circuit, where he spent Session 4 in Las Vegas, averaging 18.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 50% from the field, 40% from behind the arc, and 77% from the free-throw line.
During his junior season at Fort Bends Clements, Olajuwon averaged 21.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43% from the field and 28% from behind the three-point line, according to MaxPreps. The Rangers finished the 2025-2026 season with a 19-11 record reaching the UIL Texas District Playoffs.
During the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, Olajuwon played a key role representing Team Canada, where he averaged 9.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.
Due to his size and 6-foot-11 wingspan, Olajuwon has the tools to become a disruptive defender. His length lets him jump passing lanes, create deflections and blocks and rebound effectively from the guard position, which should allow him to be a versatile defender at the next level. The next step in his development will be adding strength to his frame, enabling him to absorb contact on drives and finish through defenders more effectively.
Olajuwon is the first commitment for Andy Enfield and the Mustangs in the upcoming recruiting cycle. The Mustangs will now turn their focus on attempting to land four-star power forward Ahmad Nur, out of Bella Vista Prep in Arizona and four-star combo guard Josiah Nance, out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California.
Scouting Report on Malik Olajuwon: Olajuwon operates primarily as a shooting guard, possessing an intriguing blend of size, feel, and burgeoning athleticism for his class. He’s not a player who forces the issue; rather, he allows the game to come to him, making deliberate decisions on the offensive end. In transition, he shows good pace and the ability to push the ball, looking for quick-hitting opportunities or settling into a half-court set while playing under control. He has a good feel for spacing and moving without the ball, finding soft spots in the defense for catch-and-shoot opportunities. His length at 6-foot-4 is a significant attribute for a shooting guard, allowing him to shoot over defenders and project as a disruptive presence on the perimeter on the defensive end.
