Five-star shooting guard Gabe Nesmith is officially off the board as he announced his commitment to Vanderbilt University, marking the highest-ranked recruit in the Mark Byington era.

Nesmith is the No. 20-overall recruit in the Class of 2027, according to 247Sports, and is the No. 6-ranked shooting guard and the top-ranked overall prospect in the state of Georgia.

The 6-foot-5 rising senior wing chose the Commodores over Arizona State, Auburn, Providence, and several others. He also held offers from Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Maryland, NC State, Rutgers, and several others. He took official visits to Vanderbilt and Providence earlier this month.

Nesmith is the highest-rated Vanderbilt commit since Darius Garland announced his commitment to the Commodores in 2018.

“I decided to commit to Vanderbilt because they can develop me and get me closer to my dreams,” he said. “The coaching staff was nice and so welcoming. They really have a plan for me. I really liked everything about my visit, and the recruitment was really personal, and that was big for my family and me,” Nesmith told On3. “I have a really good relationship with coach Chad (Myers), even though he just got there. He was always talking to me every day. We didn’t even have to talk about basketball. We’d talk about anything, so that was a good thing too, that we had a good relationship. I liked the fact that they believe in me,” he added.

Nesmith plays for Nightrydas Elite on the Nike EYBL Circuit where he is averaging 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He also currently plays for City Reapers which is a part of the Overtime Elite circuit.

247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein on Nesmith: Nesmith is multi-talented prospect with both athletic gifts and a deep bag of individual offense. Standing at 6-foot-5 with a measured 6-foot-9 wingspan, he has both positional size and long arms. He’s a bouncy vertical athlete who can rise-up at the rim for some explosive, and sometimes acrobatic, dunks. He also has an elastic quality about him with visible bend and flexibility in the way he can move, albeit a still relatively lean frame, particularly for someone who turns 18 in September.

Offensively, he’s an iso style scorer and tough shot-maker with a wealth of weapons in his arsenal. He makes shots off the catch or the dribble, but can also create his own with plenty of shake off the dribble and then a full assortment of runners, step-backs, and even one-legged pull-ups. He can even rise-up into tough shots and square in the air on his way into his release. The bottom line is that when he gets hot, he’s the type of scorer who can put points on the board in bunches, even against quality defense.

The questions surrounding Nesmith have to do with strength, defense, and efficiency. He clearly needs to keep building up his body and be more consistent with his defensive commitment. Offensively, he can be ball-dominant and settle for bad shots, which is one of the reasons why his three-point shooting numbers have never matched his sheer ability as a shooter. He’s not an incapable passer, but it tends to be a last resort. While he doesn’t have a dynamic first step, he should be able to use the threat of his jumper to open up more driving lanes. He’s going to have to learn to make quicker decisions with the ball, get off of it, value higher-percentage shots, and find his spots within the flow of a structured offense.
