Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars make a big recruiting splash on Wednesday:
Oneal Delancy, the No. 53-overall ranked player in the Class of 2027, has committed to the University of Houston, he posted on his Instagram on Wednesday afternoon.
The 6-foot-3 rising senior shooting guard chose the Cougars over Florida State and Maryland. He also held offers from Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Oregon, South Florida, UCF, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and several others.
Delancy is the first commit in the upcoming recruiting cycle for Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars. He makes a strong case for possible big-time recruits to start their efforts at joining him for the 2027-2028 season.
During his junior season at Montverde Academy, Delancy averaged 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in almost 25 minutes per game.
Delancy also has enjoyed a successful summer with the Florida Rebels, which is a part of the Nike EYBL Circuit, where he won the Nike EYBL Peach Jam this past week and helped his squad to a 20-3 overall record. He was teammates with Peach Jam MVP Cayden Daughtry. He averaged 16.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.
Delancy has had a strong relationship with Coach (Sampson) and his staff for well over a year now and had been recruiting him hard throughout the process. “My trust in the coaching staff came from the relationships they built with me and my family. They’ve been consistent, honest, and they’ve shown they truly believe in me as a player and a person,” he told On3.
He began his high school career at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. Delancy led Gibbs to the program’s first state championship since 1969 as a freshman and reached the state championship game during his sophomore season. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein on Delancy: Delancy is an aggressive scoring guard who is a threat at all three levels and can put points on the board in bunches and make tough shots when he gets going. He’s gradually becoming more of a playmaker and developing on/off ball versatility, but is most naturally suited next to a more traditional point. While he’s skilled and capable of providing an offensive spark plug, what really differentiates him is his competitiveness and work ethic. He’s strong with the ball, very adept at stopping quick for pull-ups or step-backs, plays off two feet in the lane, and has good touch around the rim. His shooting splits are 36% from 2-point range, 31% from behind the arc, and 84% from the free-throw line in Nike EYBL Scholastic play. He shot 39% from inside the three-point line, 29% from behind the arc, and 89% from the free-throw line during EYBL play this season. He lacks ideal size or length for a secondary guard. He’s a solid athlete, albeit typically under-the-rim in traffic, but plenty quick with a frame that is gradually bulking up. He embraces challenges on the defensive end of the floor, is a good rebounding guard, and has the durability and toughness to play through small bumps and minor injuries.
