Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats are heating up on the recruiting trail, where they landed five-star transfer Milan Momcilovic on Friday from Iowa State. On Sunday, five-star small forward Ryan Hampton out of DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky while on his official visit.

Hampton is rated as the No. 6 overall prospect in the Class of 2027 and the top-ranked small forward in the class, according to 247Sports. Hampton gives credit to Coach (Pope) and newly hired Assistant Coach (Mo Williams) for the credit in his recruitment where they pushed him throughout the recruiting process.

“I chose Kentucky because they showed me a vision for me to reach my dreams and ultimate goals,” Hampton told 247Sports. They will challenge me to be the best I can be on and off the court, Hampton added.

Hampton made the move to Florida after spending his sophomore season at Dynamic Prep (Texas) where he played under 18-year NBA veteran Jermaine O’Neal, after playing the first half of the 2024-2025 season at South Central Prep in Oklahoma. During his sophomore season, Hampton and Dynamic Prep made an appearance at Chipotle Nationals as a 10-seed and reached the Championship Game before finishing as the runner-up to Christopher Columbus High School out of Miami, Florida where they were led by Cameron and Cayden Boozer.

Mo Williams has a strong relationship with Hampton’s father and older brother (RJ), who is currently playing professional basketball for Changsha Yongsheng of the National Basketball League in China. RJ was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2020 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks after being a five-star prospect out of high school, where he attended Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas.

Hampton is the first official commit for Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats in the 2027 recruiting class and is excited to get onto campus.

“I’m ready for the challenge,” said Hampton. “It feels like home, so why not. I’m a top prospect, and I truly believe I will thrive at a top school. It’s been a long journey to get to this point. I thank my family, and I thank God. The best is yet to come,” Hampton added to 247Sports.

247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein on Hampton: Hampton is a budding, big wing who has gradually continued to grow through his high school years and has long arms, with a measured +4 wingspan. While he turned 18 in May of 2026, he’s still just learning to put his vast tools together. He’s a volume scorer who shows some real flashes of creation, can be athletic in the open floor, and a wing rebounder, but can simultaneously be wild with his decisions and shot selection at times.

Physically, Hampton is cut up, but has the type of frame that could really emerge in a college weight room. He’s already adept at maintaining his soft touch, even when playing through contact. He has good use of both hands, soft floaters, can pull-up over top of smaller defenders, or spin into a one-foot step-back that he likes to go to when he gets deep enough. He also shows flashes of being crafty with his footwork in the lane, varying his stride length to create separation or angles in traffic.

He’s not yet a consistent three-point shooter, but he has the touch to develop. Similarly, he has all the physical tools necessary to grow into a translatable defender. Most of all, though, it’s just about the efficiency of his approach and decision-making that could help take his game to new levels as he learns to play within the flow, move off the ball at times, and take high-percentage shots.
