King Gibson, A 6-foot-5 senior combo guard out of SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, made his commitment decision during the Border League. Gibson announced that he will be committing to Will Wade and the LSU Tigers. He chose the Tigers over Arkansas, Louisville, and Providence.
Gibson took official visits to each of his four remaining finalists with the last of those visits to Baton Rouge, where he ended up being a primary target for Will Wade and his staff.
Gibson is the second commit for LSU in the upcoming recruiting cycle, where he joins Ahmad Hudson, who is expected to play football and basketball for the Tigers next year.
During his junior season at SPIRE Academy, Gibson averaged 15.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while shooting nearly 46% from behind the arc during EYBL scholastic league play.
Gibson Was Nationally Known Before Coming to SPIRE Academy
Before coming over to play for Kevin Boyle and SPIRE Academy, Gibson made his name known on the national stage playing for George Marshall at The Burlington School in North Carolina. During his sophomore season with the Spartans, Gibson averaged 18.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 55% from the field, according to MaxPreps.
Gibson Put Up Efficient Numbers During the Grassroots Season
Gibson played with Team United on the Nike EYBL circuit, where he averaged 16.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 45% from inside the three-point line, 39% from behind the arc, and 73% from the free-throw line.
Gibson on why he chose LSU
“We have been building our relationship for a while. He was recruiting me at NC State,” Gibson told ESPN about Coach Wade. “He is a great coach, and I like their system. He listens to his assistants, too. They work together. He communicates well with his players. I spoke to some of the players on the team. They trust him, and they love him. Coach (Wade) has a big personality. He definitely likes to joke around off the court,” Gibson added.
Scouting Report On King Gibson
Gibson operates as a combo guard, but his intangibles fit more of a shooting guard role at the next level. Gibson can slide between running the offense and getting involved with his movement off the ball on the offensive end. He adds elite court vision with his size and ability to see over the defense.
On the defensive end, he can attack closeouts and read multiple offensive sets. When he has the basketball in his hands, he takes advantage of attacking the rim against smaller guards as well as having the release to get a clean look over bigger defenders. He doesn’t get rattled when being blitzed by opposing guards, and his high IQ allows him to make the right plays.
Overall, he is projected to make an immediate impact, where he can become the starting point or shooting guard depending on the lineup. He brings a versatile package of scoring, playmaking, and defense out on the perimeter.
